My name is Lisa Maier and I’m the CEO of DirectiveGroup. We’re a digital marketing agency that helps businesses dominate their market. First up, I want to thank Lunarpages for inviting us back to speak to you. As you’ve heard me say before, our marketing agency has had a long and trusted partnership with Lunarpages for many, many years, so it’s really a pleasure to be here as a guest speaker. Not many people associate search engine rankings with our web hosting provider, whereas in reality, SEO and web hosting are quite closely linked.

Speaker 2:                           01:30                     Think peanut butter and Jelly. In today’s podcast episode, I’m going to talk about the top three ways web hosting impacts SEO. The modern online marketplace is really crowded and it’s really growing fast. Business owners want to try every trick in the book to get their website noticed and to get a leg up on the competition and that makes a lot of sense. So they spend a lot of time and a lot of money making their site looking visually appealing and user friendly to attract new customers. And both of these are really good ideas, but if the website does not get found easily on the search engine results page, that’s as much as flushing money down the toilet. So, this is where search engine optimization known as SEO comes into play. SEO helps you to improve the ranking of your website and to generate more traffic, so when I talk about SEO, I don’t just mean the back end technical work such as featured snippets, sitemaps, mobile, first index robots, dot text files, things like that, and I don’t really mean just the content on the front end and I don’t mean just link building.

Speaker 2:                           02:42                     These are all essential elements and they really all need to be optimized for good organic performance of your site, but the most important starting point, which is often overlooked is the quality of your web hosting. In fact, I would say that many people that I speak to aren’t even aware of the impact of web hosting on their SEO. The web host you choose does determine the overall experience for your site visitors. You really want to avoid users the users from bouncing back to Google, do to server errors or page timeouts on your site and for that you need a reliable and solid web host. Here are the three top reasons your web host has a massive impact on your users’ SEO rankings. First uptime/downtime. Downtime refers to the percentage of time your site is off line and inaccessible due to server problems. The repercussions of your website being down and a visitor being sent back to search engines is really quite obvious.

Speaker 2:                           03:45                     This directly impacts your website’s authority as well as your bottom line. Moreover, Google spiders are frequently trying to reach your page and to crawl and index your site, but if it happens to visit your site when the website’s down, the search engine spider will record your page as inaccessible and it will just move on. Your site being marked as unreliable, as potentially risky for your rankings, as search engines do avoid displaying these kinds of sites high on their results page, so for better results, choose a reliable web hosts that offers higher uptime guarantees. You’re looking for at least 99.9 percent, which translates to roughly 1.44 minutes of downtime per day. 8.8 hours per year maximum. Don’t fall for hosting companies that advertise 100 percent uptime as some downtime is inevitable even with the highest end web hosting plans.

Speaker 2:                           04:47                     Second website loading page speeds.  That’s website page loading speed really. The major search engines pay a heck of a lot of attention to the load time of your website pages and they have factored speed into their overall ranking algorithms.  So, ranking algorithms affect how you’re placed on the search engine result page, so if a website is slow and it takes too long to load, website visitors can lose interest and they’ll choose someone else’s site. If a website takes more than two seconds to load, visitors are more likely to bounce off your website. And page load speed is even more important for mobile users who are connecting through Wifi or mobile networks along with reliability, speed has to be a really major priority for good web hosting provider. You can use online tools such as Google’s page speed tool or there’s another one that we use quite often called GT Metrics and you can use those to measure page load time.

Speaker 2:                           05:55                     Also, check on the type of hard drive and caching technology that is being used by your web host and whether there is availability of a content delivery network, a CDN, and also make sure that they ensure top notch, fully optimized hosting for your content management systems such as WordPress. You can always upgrade to VPS or dedicated servers from shared hosting plans if you want to improve your site speed and your performance. Finally, number three, IP location. Every website gets assigned an IP address that is directly related to the geographical location of the site. Having a server location that is in the same country as your business is best practice, but it doesn’t have much effect on your Google rankings. Lunarpages operates from three state of the art peerless PCI compliant data centers across the US and they have locations in Las Vegas and two in California, one in Irvine, and then the other in Hawthorn. Hawthorn.

Speaker 2:                           07:00                     A good and reliable web host is one of those things that will run in the background without you having to worry about it, and that’s really how you want it–running in the background without you having to worry about it. Besides boosting your SEO, having such a web host will ensure that visitors have an excellent experience on your site, and so they keep coming back for more. Well, that’s it for me today.
